NBKS has traveled a long way during the last 45 years since its foundation. During the period it has been making constant endeavor within its limited capacity to achieve its objectives by rendering services to the down-trodden in the society and thereby made a considerable progress towards its own growth. The path it has traveled was not very smooth and it was not of un-mixed blessings. Lot of hurdles it had to face on its way. It has been possible to cross these hurdles and constrains with support, cooperation, help and guidance from its able advisers, active members and people at large.
Details of the activities undertaken by NBKS are enumerated below:
Acquiring Land
In order to spread agri/horticulture related activities in the surrounding areas NBKS started acquiring land by phases and till now it has been able to acquire about 37 Bighas of land with help of State Government and local bodies. The entire land is now available for its use for various activities.
Sishu Kalyan Bhawan (SKB)
To render services to distressed and helpless children irrespective of caste, creed and religion, the NBKS has set up a destitute home in the name of SISHU KALYAN BHAWAN (SKB) for providing institutional services to destitute children in its campus for accommodating 50 children with the help of Central Government and Social Welfare Department, Govt. of West Bengal. This Home was inaugurated by the then District Magistrate South 24 Paranas, Sri Arun Bhattacharjee, IAS on 1st May, 1988.
Vivek Vidya Bhawan
With a view to giving the children a formal education as well as imparting vocational training to make the children equipped with specialized skill for self-employment in their later life and educational centre namely VIVEK VIDYA BHAWAN was set up with active cooperation of its members. In this context NBKS thankfully acknowledges the valuable guidance and cooperation extended by Late Pravash Chandra Roy, the then Minister of Irrigation, Govt. of West Bengal towards setting up of the centre. The children within the age ground ranging from 5 to 18 years are accommodated in Vivek Niketan. The children studying in Class I to Class VI necessary tie up arrangements have been made with a Govt. sponsored Primary School situated nearby our samity and the children studying in upper classes necessary tie up arrangements have been made with a local secondary school.
Vocational Training
The inmates of the Sishu Kalyan Bhawan are also imparted vocational training in agriculture, pesiculture and horticulture farming. The prime reason for inclusion of vocational training in curriculum is to train the children from their very early age in the above specialized fields so that they can achieve professional expertise for self-employment in their future life.
Training Programmes
With a view to making the local unemployed youths equipped with skills/techniques of different trades for self-employment, training programmes on tailoring, repairing and maintenance of electric goods were organized under the aegis of Community Polytechnic Cell, Institute of Hotel Management, Govt. of India, Training programmes on manufacture of Jam & Jelly and stitching & embroidery were also imparted for the benefit of the local women under Women empowerment scheme of the organization.
Training Programmes on Specialized Trades
Actions have been initiated to conduct training programmes on food processing, making incense sticks & catering technology to enable the trainees to build their future career on the specialized trade as well as to generate trained resource persons for further training in the rural areas.
Agriculture & Horticulture
For proper utilization of the available land and earning additional income, NBKS has taken up agri/horticulture, pesiculture, rearing of colour fish, birds etc. extensively. These works have provided employment opportunity to the local educated unemployed youths. Besides, daily wage labours working in the fields, there is potentiality for appointment of another 40 unemployed youths as soon as the Society takes up entire activities in full swing.
Alipur Barta
Unless there is awareness about the rights and privileges to which poor people living in the nook and corner of the villages are entitled, no fruitful services can be rendered for benefit of these people. With a view to creating such awareness among the marginal poor villagers NBKS started publishing ALIPUR BARTA, a regional weekly newspaper in Bengali from 13th October, 1966 for the district of 24 Parganas. With valuable contributions from the eminent personalities from the filed of literature, poetry and media, the paper has enriched itself and has become popular among the people. Till now the paper is being published uninterruptedly during last 43 years.
Old-Age Home
From the very inception of NBKS has a goal of building Old-Age Home for the needy senior citizens of our society who dedicated their youth without any hind sight for the service of the mankind caring little for their individual future. Unfortunately we could make little headway in our project for the old-age home. Moreover many of our proposed training programmes could not be taken up for implementation on account of paucity of infrastructural facilities and necessary accommodations. Financial constraints stand in the way of building, Vivekananda Meditation Centre although the plan has already been approved.
Free Computer Training Centre
NBKS has also started a Free Computer Training Centre for the poor students with the financial assistance from Indian Oil Corporation, Kolkata.
Bhalo-Basha
NBKS has provided a part of lands for setting up a burial ground for the loving animals and birds with an endeavor to provide mental peace to the animal and pet lovers, who visit here and bury their fond pets under the dense shades of the trees. Subsequently, 1st May, 2007 we established shelter house, named ‘Bhalo-Basha’ for the helpless animals, which, we believe, would be a source of joy and satisfaction to all animal lovers.
Government Training Camps
NBKS had organized some training camps of the government organizations on various trades, like health, agriculture and handy crafts etc.
Free Medical Treatment
Very recently NBKS has set up an own Charitable Health & Eye Clinic for providing free medical treatment to the local people as well as their orphan children and elder persons.
Soil Testing Laboratory
NBKS has also set up a Soil Testing Laboratory under the scheme of RKVY through Director of Agriculture, West Bengal for helping the farmers of 5 blocks of South 24 Parganas district (i.e. Bishnupur-I & II, Budge Budge-I & II, Maheshtala, Thakurpukur-Maheshtala etc) to test soil samples of their cultivated lands at a very low charge and also to guide them to cultivate properly by using very low quantity of fertilizers.
Cultural Events
NBKS is organizing cultural competition, seminar and health & eye camp, Daridra Narayan Seva cloth distribution to the poor people and prize distribution ceremony etc. in every year from 12th to 23rd January on the eve of Swamiji & Netaji birth day and foundation day of the samity.
